DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU
What started as a promising solar upgrade for a Bay Area native quickly spiraled into a costly disaster.
Sarah, a local resident, installed solar on her home in 2015. For years, she was very happy with her system. It was saving her thousands of dollars in electricity bills. However, in 2024, she realized that she needed more panels and a battery system to offset her increased energy needs. Since her original solar provider had gone out of business, she found a new company. They agreed to eliminate her annual true-up bill with an upgrade, so she signed a lease.
The month following her completed installation, Sarah was shocked to receive a massive bill from PG&E for over $600. When she called the new solar company for assistance, they were less than helpful. So she reached out to Synergy Power to see what we could do for her.
As we reviewed the situation, we began to see what was going on. To our surprise, a series of devastating revelations unfolded:
- The connection between the old and new system was installed incorrectly, and they weren’t communicating with each other.
- Because the new company didn’t follow proper protocol, she lost the 25-year grandfathering of NEM-2.
- She would continue to receive a $500+ monthly power bill from PG&E since she was operating on an incomplete system.
To complicate things further, Sarah signed a 25-year lease on the additional panels and battery, leaving her with no option but to continue working with the company that lied to her.
Given the company’s track record of mistakes, Sarah had hoped that Synergy Power could revert some of these issues. Regrettably, we had to explain that losing NEM-2 status is an irreversible action. And since only half the system is functional, she’ll have to pay those monthly electric bills on top of her solar lease.
Additionally, no other solar company can touch the system unless she either buys out the lease or pays a significant fee to break it. Our hands are tied. If we had the chance to work with her first, she wouldn’t be in this unfortunate situation.
With rate hikes and power outages happening more frequently, less-than-ethical companies like these take advantage of well-meaning people who are just trying to take control of their energy needs.
