If you’re not mad about PG&E’s rate hikes last year, you haven’t heard the news yet.
In 2024, the Bay Area utility company raised their prices on residential electricity a whopping six times, bringing the average cost to over $0.40 per kWh. That’s more than double what they were charging a decade ago, and 67% more than at the start of the pandemic. (See the chart above.) So if your bill has gone up hundreds of dollars per month recently… you’re not alone.
And the rate hikes aren’t going away. In a recent statement, PG&E acknowledges resident complaints over price but only promises that 2025 holds more of the same. They even go so far as to blame solar energy users for the increases that affect already-struggling families:
“There are other factors driving up the prices that are less apparent. Energy use in California has been decreasing over the past 15 years because of advances in energy efficiency and solar adoption. These are positive developments for our planet and for individual consumers. However, because our rates are based on dividing total costs by the units of energy used, when customers overall use less energy, it means rates rise. And that unfortunately impacts our most financially vulnerable customers.”

The utility’s insensitive and tactless statement offers little hope for residents who rely on grid power for daily living. Looming rate hikes, coupled with more complicated billing systems, will only make life harder in the coming months.
Thankfully, there’s an alternative. Switching to solar power holds a huge return on investment on Northern California households. Not only can you save thousands each year on your PG&E bill, but you’ll also break free from the constant rise in energy costs. On top of that, we’ll help you explore financing options to achieve energy independence.
If you’re interested in an alternative energy option, now’s the time to talk to us. We’ll provide you with a FREE custom estimate so you know exactly what to expect—including your bills for 2025 and beyond. (That’s not something PG&E can promise.)

Meet the Team:
Rebekah Ray
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on our very own wonder with the numbers, Rebekah Ray. She’s been with us since 2019, when she was thankful to finally find a company that shared her values of focusing on family. “[It] continues to be a huge blessing that I’ll never take for granted!”
Rebekah helps the Synergy team with various accounting duties and project management. Outside of work, Rebekah loves traveling and creating memories with her family—especially her young adult children who still think her wake surfing skills are pretty cool. We appreciate you, Rebekah!
