SWITCHING FROM GAS TO ELECTRIC APPLIANCES

Thinking about a home improvement project this summer? Do those plans include updating your appliances from gas to electric?

Many homes in California still rely on natural gas to run furnaces and heat pumps, ovens and ranges, water heaters, clothes dryers, and more. But it’s not always the cleanest or most efficient way to go. In fact, your furnace and water heater alone may account for two-thirds of your home’s energy use! Instead of paying that gas bill, switch to electric appliances that can use renewable energy from solar.

Here are some more benefits to replacing your gas appliances:

  • Eliminate leaks and emissions. Gas appliances frequently emit carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, and other greenhouse gasses. Going electric would mean eliminating those emissions from your footprint—and keeping your home safe from these dangers.
  • Come in line with new legislation. In 2022, the state of California committed to becoming the first state in the US to phase out gas-fueled furnaces and water heaters in homes. In fact, sales of new gas appliances may be completely banned by 2030. By going electric now, you’ll be ahead of the transition.
  • Receive government incentives. Beginning in January of this year, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) started offering rebates and incentives for those who switch from gas to electric-powered appliances to offset the initial costs and help promote clean energy.

Are you considering implementing some of these projects for your home? If you currently have solar, you may need to add more panels to accommodate your appliance upgrades. And if you don’t have solar but would love to eliminate your electric (and gas) bill, there’s no better time to do so.
